Soompi è stato fondato nel 1998 dalla sviluppatrice web coreano-americana Susan Kang,cite-ref-10[10]cite-ref-11[11] Nel febbraio 2011 è stato acquisito da Enswers, Inc.,cite-ref-12[12]cite-ref-13[13]cite-ref-14[14] una società IT con sede a Seul specializzata nella tecnologia di ricerca video,cite-ref-15[15] e ha operato come una sussidiaria interamente posseduta da quest'ultima. Quando Enswers fu acquisita da un'altra società, nel 2013 Soompi venne comprato da mwswCrunchyroll, un sito VOD statunitense specializzato in anime. mwtaViki ha poi acquisito Soompi il 19 agosto 2015.cite-ref-16[16]
